Abby is a 7 year old easy going German Shepherd that loves to play in a pool and be around people. Abby is good with other dogs, big and small. She loves to come over and rub against people and ask for a good petting. She can also just chill watching the world go by. Abby would do well in a home that has experience with large dogs and best in a home with older children.
Abby’s backstory is sadly still too common in 2016. Abby was used as a breeding dog in western Pennsylvania for almost 7 years. Once she was no longer able to breed, the puppy mill needed to get rid of her. Lucky for Abby, we were contacted by Finding Shelter Animal Rescue and alerted to the urgent need for her to find a home in rescue. During her physical exam, we found lumps by her mammary glands, indicating tumors. This can be common in unspayed females, especially if they have been used to breed.
We would like to thank University of Penn Veterinary Hospital for bringing Abby into the Shelter Canine Mammary Tumor Program. Abby tumors removed from 7 of her mammary glands in March. The surgery was successful, there was no evidence that the tumors spread. For being part of their research program, Abby will receive free surgery for removal of the tumors and for her spay and free follow up visits and care related to her surgery. Two of the tumors were malignant but they were successfully removed and follow up visits have shown no return of cancer.
