I am Alfie, I came to the attention of nowzad when some kind people spotted me roaming round an Afghan Government compound. My nose was raw and bleeding and so swollen my nostrils were the size of pinholes.
The nowzad team quickly came to the compound to try and catch me but I was scared and kept running off. The day they came was a cold and wet day and I eventually hid underneath a shipping container so there was no way they could get me. The nowzad team left and spoke to some policemen in the area to let them know I was sick and needed help and the very next day the policemen managed to catch me and take me to the clinic.
It was established that I was suffering from cutaneous leishmaniasis, I was in a bad way and my nose and feet were infected where the disease had caused leisions. I started treatment of antibiotics and Allopurinol and started to respond very quickly. Within a couple of months my nose was almost 100% back to normal and had returned to its proper black colour with almost no evidence I had ever had a problem at all.
I am still on daily Allopurinol for the disease and at this stage it is not known if I will need treatment for life or if I will be able to stop taking the pills. My condition is easy to manage and simply involves 2 small pills each day, it is not infectious to other animals or people.
Ideally I need an active family, I do great with other dogs but will chase cats. I also like the sound of my own voice so I will need to be worked with to teach me when it is appropriate to bark and when it isn't!
Other than leishmaniasis I have no other known health issues, I am neutered, chipped and vaccinated.
