Bailey - Female - 8 years - GRRALL #0530
NTGD Update: 9/22/2016:
ailey is a familiar face to most of you, as she was the subject of our PoundWishes fundraiser last month. For those who aren't familiar with Bailey, here's a quick summary...She is diabetic, and her owners surrendered her because they couldn't financially provide the care she needed. Because of her diabetes, she lost her eyesight quickly and is now completely blind. As you can see from her intake pictures, she was also emaciated and covered in lesions, which had to be remove d. Her veterinary care has exceeded $2,000, plus an additional $100 per month for insulin and prescription dog food. PoundWishes featured Bailey as their "Wish of the Week" and we have met 71% of our $2,500 goal for her. We just found out that she could potentially regain her eyesight with a very expensive eye surgery, which will be around $5,000. We still have more fundraising to do for Bailey, and would very much appreciate your donations for her care on # NTXGivingDay . Bailey is happy and thriving in her foster home and is almost at a healthy weight. We can only hope we raise enough for her surgery and to help this sweet girl regain her sight. Thank you to all who have previously donated to Bailey's fundraiser to those who are presently donating. Your donations truly save lives!

We'd like to introduce you to Bailey. Bailey has had a very tough road thus far, and still has a ways to go, but is improving every day.
Bailey is about 8 years old. She was surrendered because her family could no longer afford to care for her. She came to us on April 28, 2016, weighing only 37 pounds. She should have weighed 60 to 65 pounds. When we picked her up at the Humane Society, she was too weak to walk and had to be carried to the car. Our vet wasn't sure she would make it through the night.
Our wonderful vets and their caring staff members quickly went to work examining Bailey to determine what ailments she might have. It was determined that she is diabetic. It took several weeks to find the correct combination of food and insulin to keep her glucose levels normal. It was also discovered that she had a lesion on her side, which was removed and biopsied. It was determined that the lesion was cancerous, but we are hopeful all the cancer was removed. She has a checkup coming soon to confirm that.Bailey has been with one of our wonderful, dedicated fosters and now weighs 51 pounds. She still has a little more weight to gain, but is eating well and on track to a healthy weight. Bailey is also blind, due to her diabetes. Her foster mom reports that despite all she's been through, she is a happy, loving and beautiful girl. She is house trained and gets along well with most other dogs, and we are unsure how she would do with cats. We also think she would do fine with children who would respect her space and provide a calm, nurturing environment.
To date, Bailey's medical costs have exceeded $2,000. In addition, she receives insulin injections twice a day, immediately following her meals, plus she requires a prescription dog food. Her ongoing medical costs come in at about $100 per month for insulin & her RX food. Any amount you can spare to donate to Bailey's care would be much appreciated. Dogs like Bailey are the reason we rescue; we give those who seem helpless a chance to live and experience what a loving home truly feels like.
One of our amazing volunteers donated a "halo harness" for Bailey, which is a device worn just above eye-level and acts as a buffer to safeguard a blind dog's head, nose, face and shoulders from bumping into hard surfaces. When the halo taps a hard surface, it sends a signal to the dog, alerting to go in a different direction, similar to a white cane for a blind or visually impaired human. Even more amazing more than one individual offered to fund the halo harness for Bailey, she has protectors now, who will never let her down again. We would like to take a moment to thank you for reading Bailey's story and supporting our organization.
We could not function without our donors and volunteers, and dogs like Bailey probably wouldn't be here to tell their stories. #adoptdontshop - See more at: http://poundwishes.com/donate/1041578/bailey#sthash.ZTXKnmts.dpuf
