Pit Bull Terrier

Large  |  Male

Brentwood, TN

Barney was taken from a person who was neglecting him. Beaten and starving he could barely stand. When his rescuer got him his temperature was 89 degrees. A dog's normal temperature is around 100 degrees. It was 75 degrees that day and poor Barney was shivering so hard his teeth were chattering! He was so weak he couldn't hold his head up to eat. His rescuer wrapped him in a blanket, held him in her lap, and fed him a little at a time by hand. She held him all night because she wasn't sure he was going to make it and she just couldn't bare the thought of him dying alone. The next morning he was still breathing, snuggled up against her wrapped in his blanket. Later that day he was able to hold his head up for short periods. He's been getting stronger every day since!
Barney was rescued 6 weeks ago. With nothing more than good food and clean water Barney gained 5 pounds the first week. He weighed 21 pounds when he was rescued, and today Barney weighs almost 60 pounds!
It's time for Barney to find a home of his own where he can get all the love and attention he deserves. He is approximately 8 months to a year old. He was raised around two young boys. He gets along good with other dogs and would probably love to have a sister or brother to play with. Barney is very energetic. He loves to run and play. He's not good around livestock. He barks and tries to chase the rescuer's horses. He hasn't shown any interest at all in the rescuer's cat. His skin is still dry from his ordeal. Barney also had several round sores on his back that looked like cigarette burns. These have healed nicely and his hair is growing back slowly but surely. Barney was chained outside from the time he was about three months old. He's just now getting used to being able to run free. He will need to have a fenced yard so he can run around without getting lost. Barney's only issue is that he is food aggressive toward other dogs. After being starved like he was it's understandable. He has no problem with people around his food. His rescuer can pet him, put her hands in his bowl, or take it away while he's eating without a peep from him. He has had his first shots and he's been wormed. He will need to be neutered and get his rabies shot. Barney has been getting a supplement to help with his skin and coat. His rescuer will give his new parents a bottle of this supplement so that they can continue to give it to him. Please consider giving Barney the loving home he deserves.
