Bella is a sweet young lady. She is just coming into her own after being neglected and coming to rescue very skinny. Bella is flexible: she is happy to be a couch potato or go for a 3 mile walk. Bella will communicate by “talking” if she needs something, rather than barking. It’s really adorable. For instance at her foster home, she will not cross the male lead dog to get to humans, so she tells us of her dilemma. She is food motivated so training is not difficult. She is very smart. She knows how to sit and shake hands. She knows “stay” but we are working on longer periods of time. She is now learning how to lay down on command. She should sit and stay before you give her permission to eat. This reinforces that you are in charge. To get a treat she must sit or shake hands and take the treat gently. Common dog commands we’ve been working on:
“Off” if jumping up
“Down” for laydown
“Leave it” for anything you don’t want her near. (Your sandwich)
Bella will give “two eyes” and look at her human while waiting for food, or waiting to go out the door. Keeping this training going will be good for her to recognize your leadership.
• Bella walks well on an “Easy Walker” harness. She walks beside you when asked.
• In the yard, she runs and runs with others dogs, enjoying their company.
• She is house trained and crate trained. But of course needs to be put out periodically and walked after dinner and before bed.
She does not have a high prey drive, but will chase a cat if the cat runs and can be curious. She will alert to squirrels while on a walk but will not pull if verbally prompted to “leave it”.
Bella is thought to be allergic to grain, so is on a grain free diet.
Due to Bella’s history of skin sensitivity and itching, she is on a maintenance drug – Apoquel – currently twice a day 16mg. This has eliminated her itching completely. The dose may be reduced in future.
