Great Pyrenees Mix Female, 2-3 years old
Sept UPDATE! Brooke is now comfortable meeting new people and will even come over for a scratch on her ear or behind! Watching Brooke transform has been wonderful. Brooke loves other dogs, doesn't hesitate to say hello to any size dog and will play bow if given a chance. Even with the littlest of dogs Brooke just blossoms. It has been amazing to watch her bloom!
From her foster mom:
Brooke was wandering the streets in Yolo County for weeks while animal control tried to catch her. This frightened dog had no idea that people just wanted to help. When I looked into those eyes, I knew this dog needed my help. Marked as shy and fearful at the shelter, she had no chance of making it out alive without the help of a rescue group, and so we stepped in.
Upon her arrival, she had to be pulled out of her crate. Cowering into a small ball, frozen with fear she would not move. Once home, I had to carry her into my house and into her kennel, where a soft warm bed waited for her arrival. Again, she huddled in the corner trying to make herself as small as possible, hoping no one would notice she was there. I gently stroked her head and told her she was going to be ok. I decided it was time to leave her alone for a while, and let her relax without the human she seemed to fear so deeply.
As the evening passed, she happily ate a little food and drank some water. I had let her roam freely in my yard, with the leash still attached, so she could explore her new surroundings. I sat and watched from a distance as she did her best to avoid any contact with me. I decided to leave her alone, and went inside to watch her through the window. She explored more freely thinking no one was there to harm her.
As I went on with my evening, I had not realized my sliding door was open a slight jar, when all of a sudden I noticed my own dog, Tilley, had made her way outside. Fearing the worst, I ran outside only to find the two of them happily smelling each other with tails wagging. I looked at Brooke, and was amazed at the transformation before me. I saw a dog with a twinkle in her eye, her tailed raised above her back, and a huge smile on her face. She was with one of her own and she was finally happy.
Over the next few days I continued to spend as much time with Brooke in her kennel petting her and reassuring her. She still was not seeking my affection, but easily tolerated it. She never had any sign of fear aggression, she was just a timid and a withdrawn soul. I would let Tilley out several times a day, as I supervised them playing together. This was the only time Brooke seemed happy. As the days went on, Brooke started coming to me, as long as Tilley was there. She started seeking some affection from me. Everyday there was a very slight improvement.
Tilley is my hero! Tilley continues to help and support Brooke on a daily basis, and now Brooke will come to me even when Tilley is not around. The transformation has taken almost 3 weeks now. Brooke has transformed into a sweet, loving dog, who seeks my attention with a grin on her face.
Brooke is gorgeous, sweet, loving and waiting for her forever home. Brooke needs a home where someone will be willing to give her as much time as she needs to become a member of the family. Brooke will want a friend, a gentle playmate, a pack leader to help show her the way. If you think you are the family for Brooke, please come meet her, and together we can give her the future she so deserves.
