RESCUING BUZZ
Buzz Light Year was brought into Cherokee Emergency Clinic by a Good Samaritan. He was found severely emaciated, laying in a ditch. Being a large, American Bulldog mix, Buzz should’ve weighed around 80-90lbs, yet he actually weighed a mere 55lbs! At first, we thought Buzz was skinny from lack of food and intestinal parasites, but we noticed he was frequently regurgitating his food. Dr Leathers confirmed our suspicion: Buzz has megaesophogus. This means his esophagus does not contract to push food down into his stomach like a normal dog. The food sits in his esophagus and he eventually regurgitates it. Megaesophogus is not a death sentence and it can be easily managed … Buzz is at a healthy weight and doing well.
ABOUT BUZZ
So what is it like to care for Buzz?
Buzz eats a combination of wet food and water that has been mixed in a blender until it’s the consistency of a soupy-slop. He has to eat in the up-right position as well. His food bowl is placed on the bathroom counter and he stands up to put his front legs up on the counter to eat. Because he’s somewhat standing up, the food is able to travel down his esophagus even though the muscles of his esophagus can’t push the food down. This simple feeding method means he does not regurgitate his food anymore.
Buzz is a low-key kinda guy. He's a BIG boy (over 80lbs!) and he does well with other dogs, especially when they’re chill like he is. He really is a laid-back, gentle giant. He loves affection and he is happiest relaxing on his dog bed or rolling around in the grass in the sunshine.
