Chance 1 year old Collie mix Good with dogs NO cats Good with older kids Fostered in Rathdrum, ID Hello everyone! My name is Chance. I'm a young beagle mix who has had a really rough start to life. I was abandoned by my owner and left in a shelter where I totally shut down. I hid my face and I even got stuck in the drain while trying to avoid human contact. It was rough for me to be in there all alone. I was scared and confused as to what had happened to me. The shelter manager worked hard to get me to learn to trust her, and I did. However, my real personality started to show and it was hard for me to find a rescue to have the patience for me. I have had no guidance or training. When I first arrived to my foster home, I was completely out of control. However, after quite a while of trying to problem solve my behaviors, my foster mom has learned that I need a lot of activity. I have been to agility and to the dog park and have done really well. She has begun to treadmill train me for the days she can't exercise me and I'm really learning to enjoy it. I can jog up to 30 minutes (over a mile) and right now, it's enough to burn out some of my energy. I play with the other dogs periodically, but I'm more interested in keeping my brain going with sniffing all the new smells. Foster mom says I'm really trying hard to be a good boy. I have a short attention span, but I love to learn. I'm much better with positive reinforcement. I don't like being forced to do anything and respond very well to treats and praise. I want to please my people, but it's really hard sometimes. So far, I know sit and am doing really well on "come." I may have been taken away from my mom too young. I'm mouthy and use my mouth to show excitement and affection. I also like to jump on people, which is being corrected in my foster home. My next command to learn is going to be "place" so that I can settle down and have a spot to go when you need a bit of space. Because of my lack of control, I need to be in a home with older kids who can tell me not to jump and won't get upset if I mouth them. I don't bite, but will tell you I don't like something (forceful correction). My foster family is also trying to settle my crate anxiety. Whatever happened to me in my past has left me with a lot of scares and fears. The crate makes me feel like I'm going to be abandoned so I have to be in a special crate right now that I cant escape. I'll be slowly transitioned into a normal crate soon! I hope you'll give me a chance to show you what a good boy I can be. Foster mom here! Chance is a really good boy with a ton of potential. He needs a very active family who can exercise him daily. He needs daily activity and would thrive with an avid runner or hiker. He is stubborn, but really craves affection and love. Chance has done well with my pack, but he is not good with cats or small animals. He has too much prey drive and may get too carried away. I have a toddler who he does well with most of the time but because of his lack of self control and prey drive, the movements of a young child may be too much for him to handle. I have taken Chance to agility and he excels at it and I would like to see him continue to do agility on top of vigorous exercise and structure. He really is a good boy and I am so proud of how far he has come. Give him a chance to be your best friend.
