Perky, good natured, and extremely loyal...that's 6- to 7-year-old Chippewa! This 7-lb. Chihuahua-Rat Terrier mix gets along wonderfully with everyone--adults, children, other dogs, and even cats. He has terrific house manners, is fully house trained, and never gets into any trouble. Chip barks occasionally, but for the most part is a quiet and very mellow fellow, although he does go into happy dance mode in the morning when it is time to get up and breakfast is on the horizon. His calm, patient approach to life is no doubt largely due to his eye problems. Chip has dry eyes, medically known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Since his rescue in April, he has been on many eye meds in an attempt to improve his condition. After four months of cyclosporine to try to regenerate tear production, with no measurable results yet, we are losing hope that his eyes will ever begin tearing on their own, so he is almost certainly going to need eye lubrication drops/gel multiple times a day for the rest of his life. This means he needs an adoptive home where he isn't regularly left alone during the day for more than a few hours at a time. Fortunately this easygoing guy makes the process a piece of cake, letting you pick him up and put in his drops without any struggling or resistance. In fact he seems to understand that this is for his benefit, and he will often offer you a little kiss when you are done. His vision impairment does make it a little challenging to navigate new environments, but he is so eager and willing to give it a try, and in familiar territory, he gets around with no problems (even going up and down staircases). On a recent camping trip, Chip did great on the hikes, taking on steep, rocky trails with a sense of adventure. At home he does not get on furniture, although he does love to lie beside you on the couch or sleep in bed with you if you will lift him up.
