American Staffordshire Terrier

3 years, 2 months
Medium  |  Male

San Diego, CA

Kilo is a gentle giant that speaks with his amber colored almond eyes instead of his bark. His quiet and docile demeanor has had him over looked in the rows of kennels, as he has been in and out of the shelter his whole life. He has never experienced a stable or loving home until he was rescued out of the North Central Shelter. Kilo is a 3 year old, 75 pound, neutered male, brown and white American Staffordshire Terrier. Kilo LOVES chewing on his elk antler and receiving affection from all types of humans.
Kilo has a very calm energy about him. He has lived with my 13lb terrier for the past 3 months and has proven LIGHTYEARS lower maintenance than his foster brother, Waffles. Kilo is not a needy dog. He likes to nap on human beds and couches. He likes naps, a lot. He adores his humans. He likes any kind of food, never misses a meal. He is perfectly potty trained, takes treats gently, doesn't bark, is very good on leash, not pushy, doesn't necessarily need to work out tons of energy, 1 or 2 walks a day is fine, apartment living may suit him, no separation anxiety as of now. He has such a precious and innocent way about him, like he's "just happy to be here."
According to the MRI results, a cyst was found on his spine which causes a slight dragging of his paws and abnormal placement of his limbs, i.e. crosses limbs, knuckles over. Defined as Canine Proprioceptive Ataxia, Kilo lacks normal perception of the location of his limbs. It is not painful nor debilitating and will not aggressively progress. The neurologist does not believe surgery is necessary but prescribed prednisone to see if it would shrink the cyst and improve perception. It did help improve his coordination but made him very unresponsive and without emotion. With that result, the neurologist decided that he did not need to continue the medication. As of now, he isn't on any medication and doesn't need any immediate veterinary care. His condition only needs to be monitored moving forward.
