Daisy

American Pit Bull Terrier

Medium  |  Female

Denton, TX

"Daisy" (responds to name) is estimated to be 5 months old (Oct 2016). She was found abandoned and alone at a highway rest stop in an unincorporated area. She loves to run, jump, play, and be active. She can jump very high and seems to be on springs! She is sweet, loving, loyal, and very affectionate with her people. She loves kisses and snuggles. She is very protective of the people she attaches to. She gets excellent reports from doggie daycare- they say she plays well with all the dogs. She does not seem to do well with other dogs *in the home*, growling, and trying to keep them away from the other household members, and also scrapping over a bone. This behavior has improved a bit with doggie daycare attendance.
When introduced to our extended family, while timid and scared at first, she warmed up to them within one visit and was very comfortable around them. She was reported to have done well around a 1.5 and 2.5 year old (stayed in their house for a week), and a 7 year old child (all boys), but barked aggressively at a 6 year old girl and a 3 year old boy (in public)-- because her behavior around children seems to vary, it would be best done with strict adult supervision and probably older youth. She travels well in the car; sleeps in her crate at night and on nap breaks. She does not yet use her crate to self soothe, and could use some training in this area. She seems to be trainable, wants to please her owners, just needs someone who can work with her.
Daisy cannot be around cats. Her foster has 2 cats and she has fought with them many times. Most recently one of the cats punctured Daisy's eye (treatment underway and healing very well, appears to be no long term damage), which did not seem to deter Daisy. Daisy has not bitten anyone, but has barked very aggressively at strangers several times, especially men. She does not like to be startled or surprised; seems very timid in the dark; This has improved some since her daycare attendance. Daisy loves to fetch and retrieve a ball, and will chew a Nylabone for hours on end; she dislikes whistling; she gets upset for some time when she is in the crate when you are home with her, but she will settle down;
Daisy loves to be near her loving people, and likes to lay on the couch together. When she first joined her foster’s household, she had multiple potty accidents (off leash in the house. When staying with a friend for a week, she easily adapted to using a doggie door. Now that she is back with her foster the potty accidents have STOPPED, but it is unclear whether potty accidents are not happening because she is house trained or because she is on leash (due to the cats).
