Red Heeler

5 years, 4 months
Medium  |  Female

Whitestone, NY

We don’t know what happened to Dixie before she made her way to Second Chance Rescue. She arrived to us from South Carolina with a broken pelvis and anxiety. She’s been in foster care for about 2 months so she could heal and in that time she’s been around other dogs, children, and adults. She has a sweet disposition, loves to be pet (especially behind the ears where she’ll let out an approval grunt). Dixie is a Red Healer, 5 years ol ... d and weighs about 42 pounds a perfect size.
In the home she’s comfortable although she’s afraid of squeaky toys, vacuums, and loud noises. If she gets scared she retreats to her crate in her bedroom but for the most part she hangs with the family in the living room. Because of her anxiety it’s important for Dixie to have a safe place of her own. In foster care she had a crate with the door open. She takes her time in getting to know you but once she does her little tail wags anxiously for love and petting.
Outside of the home Dixie is more anxious. She’s weary of everyone but not aggressive, she will simply retreat behind her handler. Because of her anxiety it’s important that while on walks to have a good handle on her because she will bolt. Her foster mommy believes she can relieve some of that anxiety with training but given her broken pelvis, Dixie spent more time healing than behavioral training. We believe Dixie will do best in a home in the suburbs with less social stimuli than her foster home which is in Manhattan.
Overall, she’s a great dog who loves to be pet, will listen to commands in the home, and is mostly potty trained. With gentle love, she’ll come around to be the happy pup she is and with a little help she may learn to be secure with herself as well.
Get ready to welcome this little girl to your home! She’ll be a great addition for an experienced pet owner.
Footnote*** Dixie is in heat and can not be spayed yet in about 2 months she can be spayed.
Will do best in a home with:
Gentle love
Mostly quiet
Suburban area
