Looking for a fun, head-turning-kind-of-handsome companion to take on adventures and share a lifetime of memories with? Then you have found just the dog in our resident stud-pup: Ferdinand.
It's a common misconception that purebred dogs are almost impossible to find in the world of everyday animal rescue, but it's actually far from the reality. Purebreds are a common sight at shelters, and are sometimes more at risk for euthanasia than their mutt counterparts. Such seems to be the story of Ferdinand.
We first met Ferdie at the end of a long row of kennels in one of the highest-kill shelters in the area. While the other dogs around him were going into overdrive with barks and snarls, scared of the fate that may await them as each second passed, Ferdinand caught the attention of our staff with the way he approached the kennel divide with grace, caution and composure.
One look into this handsome guy's face and our jaws almost hit the floor.
A purebred, young Doberman -- and the more rare chocolate color, no less -- who had, according to his kennel information, been given up simply for having more energy than his former family could handle. A sad reason to discard such a wonderful dog, but unfortunately, it happens. A lot.
We took Ferdinand out into the small, cramped meet-and-greet kennel, and he instantly came up to our staff members and leaned into their legs, begging for ear scratches and wiggling his stumpy tail in excitement. He was patient and polite as our photographer took photo after photo, holding extra still as she snapped away, then coming over to kiss her face and sniff her camera once she'd finished.
Our hearts melted. Ferdie was so filthy, sick and sad-looking; it was probably the first time anyone had shown him any attention since he was dumped at the shelter. We knew a dog like Ferdinand would find a fantastic forever home in a heartbeat, so imagine how both thrilled and confused we were when the shelter told us we could take him because no one else was interested.
No other interest? How could that be?
Regardless, since coming to the haven of New Leash On Life's thirteen-acre Ranch property, Ferdinand has blossomed into a smart, loyal, loving guy who wants nothing more than to stretch out in the sun or play tag in the dog park.
He has earned the affectionate nickname of "Velcro" among the staff and volunteers -- he still wraps around our legs, much like a curious but shy toddler, especially when he needs reassurance he is safe.
Ferdinand's former family obviously spent no time whatsoever trying to socialize or train him -- he would benefit greatly from a basic obedience course, and needs to get out and about in the world and try new experiences!
We have no doubt that with a little effort, Ferdinand will make the finest of family dogs, full of enough love and loyalty to last for years to come!
