Friends to the Forlorn Adopt-a-Bull
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Estimated Date of Birth: August 8, 2009
Location: Alpharetta, GA
Fievel had a rough start. A police officer brought him straight to the vet and animal control was called after he was hit by a car. Fievel found himself in Fulton County in a lot of pain due to his broken front leg. We had a foster step up and we were able to pull Fievel and get him to our vet. After reviewing his x-rays, the vet put a cast on his leg. Fievels leg has healed nicely without surgery and he has undergone treatment for his heartworms. His foster family had noticed he was having some incontinence issues, so he started wearing a diaper. After getting him checked out at GVS, he was diagnosed with an Ectopic Ureter. EU is defined as an ureteral opening in any area other than the normal position in the bladder. This results in lack of urinary control. The surgery that attempts to correct this condition only has a 50-75 percent success rate and costs $3,000, but Fievel is worth every penny. Unfortunately, the surgery did not take and Fievel is still a tad incontinent.
In spite of his challenging circumstances, Fievel is a very happy, snuggly, and handsome boy who loves hanging out with his 4-legged foster sister. He is crate-trained, house-broken, minus some dribbles in the diaper, and he loves basking in the sunshine and he enjoys a good roll in the grass. He can be a little shy at first with new people or places, but it is only for a passing moment and he adjusts quickly. He loves everybody and is great with other dogs. He especially loves giving kisses and snuggling on the couch. Fievel will chew on the occasional bone or antler, but he is not super interested in toys. He is not a high speed dude; he is more of a laid-back, low-maintenance kind of guy. From time to time, he will limp slightly on his front leg that was previously broken so Fievel is not the guy that can join you for long walks, but if you’re looking for a low key, well-mannered house-dog, he’d be more than happy to be your snuggle buddy! Fievel would prefer a home without cats or small children.
*So what does Fievel’s incontinence issue entail?
Fievel does not full-on pee in the house and he is able to save the majority of it for when he goes outside. He just dribbles. He has a few diapers, we call it a diaper, but it is actually called a belly-band, that are machine washable and we line them with heavy duty maxi pads. Yes, you heard that right … maxi pads! When the pad gets too wet, simply throw the pad away and stick a new one in the diaper. Usually his pad gets changed two to three times a day. When Fievel goes outside, the diaper comes off easily as it is Velcro and when it is time to come back in, the diaper goes back on. Fievel is not bothered by the diaper one bit. He leaves it alone completely and he will stand still while you put it on him.
