Hamlet

Shih Tzu

Small  |  Male

Hamlet is an energetic little guy that loves to meet new people. He'll show off by tossing a toy around or just generally running around the room when people come over. He can be very loving and loves belly scratches, but only when it's on his terms. He can be social at times, but other times he just wants to sit on the chair and look out the window. Hamlet can rollover, laydown, shake, "walk" (where he's up on his hind legs) and then "dance" (up on his hind legs and moves his front paws up and down). He'll play fetch inside the house if you have a big enough area to do so, but has no interest in it outside (too many distractions).
Hamlet will go into the kennel just fine, but gets a little anxious and scratches the side of it if left alone. Unfortunately, he can't really be trusted to be left out of the kennel unsupervised as he'll get on the table and counters (yes he finds a way) and then he'll open any bag or purse left out looking for food.
Hamlet sleeps on a dog bed in the bedroom although doesn't stay on it throughout the night, but will return to the bed when told (using the word "bed"). He eats 1/3 cup of Natural Balance chicken and rice dog food twice a day and then does get treats when he's good. Occasionally he'll get some table scraps in his bowl and then whatever he finds on the ground (he's almost constantly looking for food). He's been trained to potty in a gravel 5x10 foot "litter box" outside, but will also take any chance to do it on the grass when not being supervised. I'm sure a few times on the leash in a new box with some treats and he'll get the idea.
Hamlet loves to go for walks, although doesn't get enough. He loves to go on hikes and cool off in the water if there is some and he's very curious. He does not like to be left alone outside and will find any way to get your attention to let him back in. He's also very clever and will try to find a way to escape the back yard, if left out, to then show up at the front door to be let in. He has never run away and can usually be found within a house or two if he escapes.
When Hamlet is tired he just wants to be left alone and can get a little aggressive if you're in his face. It's his way to telling you you're not welcome, but could potentially have negative consequences. He also doesn't like when kids grab his tail or face and might nip at those bothering him.
Overall, Hamlet would do very well in an adult home that is able to get him out for walks a few times a week.
