Helen is a 6-year-old spayed chocolate female. When Helen first came to Lab Rescue she was in rough shape. She was emaciated and blind and was found walking along the highway. Once at the shelter in West Virginia, her sweet disposition was discovered and Lab Rescue was called to help. Helen is a chocolate Lab who's spent so much time outside that her coat is very bleached. Her initial veterinary tests revealed diabetes which is what caused the blindness. It is likely that it had never been diagnosed and never been treated. Helen has been under veterinary care since mid-April and has begun to gain weight. We have been controlling her blood sugar levels with Insulin and, initial glucose levels appear to be stabilizing. Helen is becoming the happy Lab that she always should have been. She loves toys! She loves people! She loves belly rubs! Because she can't see, she gets very excited when meeting other dogs and introductions need to be done slowly. We don't have any cat or kid history, so she's approved for kids 10 and up. Helen needs to go to a family with a fenced-in yard where she can explore and play around. She will need someone who can commit to giving her insulin on a regular schedule every day. Foster family reports: Helen is such a sweet girl. She continues to feel comfortable in her home and is perfect for her insulin shots and eye drops. She has relaxed so much since she first arrived. She loves to go for walks and walks beautifully with an Easy Walk harness. While in the house, she plays with her squeaky toys or just hangs out next to foster mom. She loves to follow you around. She's working on gaining weight so she can have her cataract surgery. Update: Helen has gained 2.2 pounds in two weeks and weighs 53.6 pounds now! She loves to lie on the deck or close to where Foster mom is - her humans are her favorite! No crate needed for this girl and only needs a short walk to take care of business. We don't want to burn too many calories so she can keep putting on weight. She loves riding in the car and loves everyone who arrives in one. Her bleached out coat is almost gone and the color of her new coat is stunning! Update: Helen continues to blossom with love and good food. This sweet girl is a car addict and loves to ride and travel. Helen likes to be around her people and loves belly rubs and ear scratches. She is not afraid of storms, takes treats gently, does not counter surf and doesn't bark or chew! Update: Helen is a true love bug and her Foster Mom feels she would make a great therapy dog, desk buddy, or RV companion. She loves to travel and be with her people. Helen is diabetic and has plans to have her eye surgery soon to help improve her vision. Update: Helen has gained 3 more pounds!! She's doing great in her foster home and having limited eyesight before her surgery doesn't stop this girl! Check out the video of her playing fetch! Update: Helen has reached the perfect weight of 60 pounds and is eligible for her eye surgery to remove a cataract from untreated diabetes. 6 yr old Helen is a dark chocolate shadow who loves car rides, walks, carrying a toy baby, squeaky balls for fetch, and following her foster Mom up and down the stairs all day. She is not afraid of storms or fireworks but, because of her limited eyesight not is not a fan of barking dogs who charge her. Helen's perfect home has someone home more often than not and a family who can commit to a schedule for insulting injections twice a day. Helen weighs 54 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with adults and/or kids ages 10 and up. This dog is available for adoption from Lab Rescue LRCP. The rescue has about 50 dogs available for adoption at any given time.
