Abracadabra! I'm Howie! I'm smart, handsome and incredibly talented! After spending my first few years as a yard ornament in rural NC, I am learning all kinds of new and exciting things. I currently know sit, bed, wait and come. I LOVE to play ball, and I’m a very fast swimmer. My foster peeps are working with me to see if I might have some Dockdog talent. Stay tuned for more on that! My life so far has been a bit of a roller coaster. I came to BARC with an owie foot that turned out to be a crushed toe. I’ve had the owie toe removed and that's all healed and I’ve completed treatment to get rid of the nasty heartworms that I had because I was never given the magic pill to keep them from doing their thing. I'm now all good as new, and I’m ready to find my forever family. Just think how impressed all your friends will be if you choose me to be your new family member! It’s been said that I’m one of the most tolerant dogs my BARC peeps have ever met. I have let them do whatever needed to be done to help me without a single complaint. I’m great for baths and nail trims. I stand politely and will even hold up my paws for my manicure. I love people of all sizes, and am very gentle, but I would do best in a home with older children that can be expected to close doors and gates behind them so I don't get out and run loose. I don’t jump up on anyone, and I’m not at all mouthy. I take treats very gently. I'm praise and treat-motivated. I REALLY enjoy car rides and don't even mind when we end up at the vet. I LOVE getting attention and treats from everyone I meet. I'm a 78 pound, goofy mixed breed boy. My peeps think possibly a Great Dane/Pointer/Who Knows What. Whatever the combination is, I turned out pretty handsome, if I do say so myself! I’ve got the big Great Dane head and a long-legged Pointer body, so the usual bully-breed restrictions don't pertain to me (though make sure there aren't weight restrictions where you live). Because I was chained up and attacked by other dogs in my previous life, I don’t quite know what to make of other dogs. I have learned to be quite tolerant of all the comings and goings of the other dogs at our little shelter, but I do get anxious around strange dogs and if they get too close, I go on the defensive. My BARC peeps think I will do best as an only dog. I'm a good boy. Can I come home with you?
