Hi my name is Joe. I am a mix of Labrador, shepherd and boxer. I am about 12 months old. My previous family surrendered me. They told me and the pound people that I was “too much” to handle. They never did any training with me. All they did was leave me in the back yard. I felt like a yard ornament. I was so scared but Follow Your Heart Animal Rescue saved me from certain death and asked Pets Return Home to help me with my behavior. I am not a dog that needs to be killed – I just need some love and attention.
I play with 20 other dogs here at the ranch. I do not get into fights and I listen to my trainers. I play hard with the other dogs here. We go swimming, hiking, rock climbing and bike riding. I am a jock boy for sure. I push the next dog in order to test and play. I always turn away from fighting. I do not like fighting. It hurts and my trainers do not like it.
I do like to be pet and lay with my leader on the couch or on the hammock outside. I can be over-protective of my human family if allowed, so please be sure to keep that in mind if you bring me home. I like to be told what to do and listen well.
I love attention from humans and being with them. With that said, I am so eager to start pleasing another family – can you be them? Do you know someone that could be my new family? Even fostering me for a while will help me get back into the “groove” of family living.
What do you say – will you give me some love for a while… or forever?
Behavioral Coach Notes:
Joe came to us as a behavioral refinement student. He was described as dog aggressive and "out of control" by his owner. The owner was surrendering Joe to the Maricopa Animal Control Facility when a foster parent from Follow Your Heart Animal Rescue group talked her into giving Joe to her. The owner named Joe - 'Cujo' which we changed to Joe upon receiving here at Pets Return Home.
Upon arrival Joe was lacking human and canine socialization skills. He had no dog-to-dog or dog-human manners. We allowed Joe to learn canine manners as his first step towards restoration. His "education" was bolstered by more than 40 or so dogs coming in and out of the ranch. He quickly and sometimes painfully, learned there are dog communication protocols he needs to adhere to.
We can say today he is very well behaved with the other dogs here on the ranch. Our work has shown he is a friendly dog with lots of energy. He likes to please people and plays well with other dogs. We liken him to a college freshman football or rugby player. Plenty of ego and energy. Joe will get along with a confident and socialized dog. He has learned canine-manners and knows when he has gone too far. He takes dog on dog correction well. He will not be a good fit for an insecure, poorly socialized or dominant dog.
Joe is gentle with kids and older humans alike. He still challenges on leash by pulling - but knows what is right and needs a consistent leader to reinforce his leash manners. He likes to be petted, will snuggle up and sit by himself. He likes to hike, swim and climb rocks alone and within a pack. He is a good boy and needs some consistency in home life and leadership.
Recommend training reinforcement of human to canine and canine to canine manners and command training.
