Say "howdy" to Kazar! Here's the scoop on this sweet senior. He is about ten-years-old, but is still pretty spry. We pulled him from a kill shelter after his previous owner surrendered him. He is an amputee, and we don't know the backstory with regard to that, but he gets around very well. Medically, he is in GREAT shape, with the exception of some arthritis, which is not unusual for his age. We have found that a high-quality joint supplement (such as NuPro or Connectin) and taking 1/2 of a Rymadyl works very well for him. Weight management will be extremely important for him, and he could stand to drop another five pounds or so. According to the vet, he does seem to be recovering from some sort of food allergy (probably shelter food) and recommends a good quality, large breed, grain-free food. Kazar is perfectly house trained and will bark to go out. He is able to easily navigate small sets of stairs (3 or 4). Solid surface floors are fine, but he does need a bed for his old man joints and some strategically placed rugs. He tends to hang out where the people are and prefers to sleep and eat in a quieter area. No vision or hearing issues. Doesn't seem to care about our cat and enjoys playing with other, older dogs. Of all the pups at our house, he DOES NOT like the 10 month old. Not sure why. He tends to display an alpha personality, though does not mess with our established male alpha (who is in a wheelchair). Kazar won't be your jogging partner, but he will be right by your side. He definitely loves to be with his people and loves kids as well. He does not need to be confined and has great house manners. He rarely barks, except when he is excited! Because we live on a farm, he is often out off-leash with us. He's shown no intrest in the horses. If you would like to be the family that Kazar gets to spend his golden years with, please contact your adoption coordinator. If you are not yet approved and in our adoption territory of VA, NC or MD, you can find our adoption application at our website, www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Kazar is being fostered in Havelock, NC (near Jacksonville, NC).
