What is a Mischievous Mutt???
The Mischievous Mutt program is HSU''s initiative to successfully place dogs with some behavioral challenges. This program allows us to place these dogs for adoption although they may require a little extra training & patience to help them become the best canine companions they can be. They are not bad dogs but need a special type of family to ensure they will thrive in their new home.
What makes this dog a Mischievous Mutt?
Kestler is an animated young dog with a big, busy personality. He was originally a transfer from another shelter, so most of his history is a mystery. He can get a little carried away with his enthusiasm & be rather ungentlemanly when first meeting new dogs. He needs a patient family who will take the time to teach Kestler proper doggie etiquette, including a healthy dose of impulse control. While Kestler does well with most dogs, his pushy, bouncy play style may be too much for some dogs. He will be able to live with some dogs but not all. He would do best with dogs his same size & speed who will not be too annoyed by his antics. He needs a home where his canine pals are patient & well socialized to help teach him the ropes of being a part of a family.
What is recommended to make this adoption successful?
Formal training is strongly recommended. There are many trainers to choose from. We recommend doing your homework to find a trainer who uses science-based positive training methods & has previous experience training dogs with similar behaviors as the dog you''re adopting. We work closely with a certified behavior consultant & highly recommend her services. Any animal adopted from HSU will receive a 25% discount on any services offered. Go to www.beakstobarks.com for more info!
Ample mental stimulation (training) & exercise daily are a must. Adopter should have knowledge & experience with this particular breed of dog.
ALL Mischievous Mutt adoptions are finalized by our behavior department. This is done to help you & Kestler succeed. If a behavior staff member is not available, the adoptions staff can assist you in making an appointment. (This is typically the case on Sundays.) If you have another dog at home, you will need to bring them in for an introduction. We will assist you in introducing them & provide feedback based on their interactions.
