Loki spent the majority of his short life crated, so is trying hard to "catch up" with human and animal socialization and manners skill group. He will need a dog savvy adopter, preferably one will bully breed experience, as in addition to neglect he also shows signs of being physically mistreated. He is a very sweet, handsome boy who *so much* wants to please his humans, and has no idea how to do so. Due to his isolated upbringing, he very easily becomes overexcited and hyper. He has been in foster for less than a week, and every day there are small but significant improvements. He is being walked on and off leash daily for at least an hour-- this serves to give him appropriate exercise while also "taking the edge off" so he can approach new situations a bit more calmly and consider how to appropriately solicit attention. He is very sexually motivated right now and "humps" a lot, but his neuter is scheduled for next week so that should help tremendously.
Loki has a very high prey drive, so a home with cats or other small animals will not be considered. He loves people of all ages and sizes, but due to his strength and puppyish cluelessness, young children would not be considered at this time, although down the road he could likely do quite well with them ( he is fostered with a 5 year old who he adores, and is good with initially, but then gets too excited and knocks him down trying to hump).. He seems to love dogs of all sizes and sexes, but he solicits play constantly, and does not respond to other dogs' corrections, so any other dogs in the home would have to be tolerant of his playfulness and provide appropriate corrections repeatedly, or else be similarly playful, tireless dogs. We would prefer female dogs only in the home at this time, though males would be considered on a case by case basis. He is doing fine with dogs of both sexes on his walks but has not done fantastic with the other males in his foster home-- but this is due to a lot of factors, not all of them within his control.
He loves treats, attention of any sort, tennis balls, chew toys--especially antlers, walks, and just hanging out with "his" people. He is not always sure how to do that well-- sometimes he gets so over excited he starts humping or mouthing or jumping like a bunny, but he learns more everyday. Loki likes to wade in and splash around in streams/lakes. He is partially housebroken and working on that. He needs a person or family who can provide him with the love and training he needs to flourish. Due to the extreme deprivations/mistreatment of his past and the effects on him, a home where he is alone for 9, 10 or more hours a day would not be a good fit.
He is a gorgeous, kind, very special dog. Please submit an application if you feel he may be a good fir for your home. The rescue can also put you in direct touch with his foster to answer any questions, set up a meet and greet, or just sing his praises and share stories about him.
