9/19/16: Things with Marty the past couple months have been only been getting better!
(Back in the early part of June, he had to have some rotten teeth removed, and that surgery on top of being in the shelter really stressed him out. He was having some major issues with his loose stools, and he had also lost about 15 pounds of weight, but we thought once he was in a home with lots of love things would get better. However, not much had improved in terms of gaining weight or forming stools so the Vet switched up his food to a strict hydrolyzed protein diet plus other medications for Irritable Bowel Syndrome.)
It has taken a few months and another hospitalization but I can honestly say things are SO MUCH BETTER! He's back up to a healthy weight and his stools are firm. We currently have him on hydrolyzed protein dry food, a dry herbal supplement sprinkled over his food, a steroid that he takes once every 3 days, and a fatty acid supplement, which he will be done with soon. For treats, he gets his dry food for now because we don't want to upset his tummy too much, but honestly he doesn't know the difference. Marty's happy with ANY food and he even has quite the happy dance when he knows it's time to eat! He loves catching his treats up in the air in between meal times... he is really good at it too!
As for the kennel... it is NOT his favorite. The poor guy has some serious abandonment issues and will happily follow you around the house all day long, but as soon as he goes in the kennel, he gets pretty worked up and barks. In fact, the ONLY time he ever barks is when he's in the kennel or left alone outside. I have had some success using treats and food as reward, but even as food-motivated as he is, he still does not like going in the kennel knowing that he will be left alone. I have left him inside my house with my other dog while I'm gone for short periods and he seems to be fine. He is an older dog and does need to go outside to relieve himself every few hours so him being left in a kennel or inside the house would be best if only for shorter periods at a time.
Marty is the absolute happiest and best dog when you are able to spend time with him cuddling on the couch or just hanging out at home. He loves to go for walks, to get outside and smell all the smells and chase squirrels. He his quite strong and fast for his age so we use training collars or an easy walker to reduce the pulling and that does help. He does great with other dogs, he actually ignores dogs all together because all he cares about in his entire world is you! There have been times where other dogs have been barking in the neighbor's yards and he won't blink twice at them. He absolutely loves every person he meets and has such a friendly personality. Marty is the certainly one of the most lovable, affectionate dogs I've known! He's totally stolen my heart!
6/25/16: This guy is such a lover! All he wants is to be right by my side at all times for pets and snuggles. It's pretty adorable, if you didn't know any better you'd think he's been here his whole life!
I haven't been crating him at night because he's much happier sleeping in our room on our bed or floor. He loves sniffing out rabbits and squirrels in our backyard too. He hasn't caught any...yet! So Mr. Marty Snuggles has been doing pretty great overall! He's very happy!
6/1/16 Volunteer Feedback: Marty McFly is the most laid back dog I have had the opportunity to spend time with in awhile. He was so easy-going; all he wanted to do was sit next to me, get pet, and give a few gentle kisses. He is the sweetest old man, but he doesn't act his age! He is still a spry young pup inside and his body doesn't seem to slow him down much at all. He is a happy fellow. I don't have any major concerns with Marty, I haven't seen any bad behaviors from him at all. He has met a few dogs at the shelter and has done fine, but because of the environment, more dog testing should be conducted outside the shelter before we can say he is bomb proof. I have not seen him jump up at all, and he doesn't have an over abundance of energy. He really is just a sweet, older guy looking for a nice home to live out his golden days. He does have a specific type of food he eats and is on some meds for some digestive issues, but those are expected to dissipate once he is in a home environment and away from the stress of the shelter. Please consider giving Marty a chance. He is a great, loyal companion that just wants a nice bed or couch to snuggle on. He has totally won my heart, and will no doubt steal yours too!
