There is simply no dog greater than Mater!! Mater came to the TLR for the second time in his life 4 1/2 years after his first adoption because his family was having their second child, which must be so sad for him. Mater has been in his foster home for 8 months and is still awaiting the perfect adopter that will fall in love with him. Mater is 100% potty trained, crate trained (although he's respectful in the home and would not need a crate), knows basic commands and has developed into his mature personality!
Mater is a quiet guy in the home and rarely barks. Mater is usually curled up on the couch or his bed with his humans or his favorite plastic bone to chew on. He will allow food, toys, treats and bones to be taken away from him with no fuss at all! However, an adopter should continue to practice easy, positive methods for removing items from Mater such as "trading" and "leave it". Mater truly ADORES his humans and always wants to be by their side as the loyal dog he is. His tail goes wild whenever he is loved on and he loves every second of it (he even loves having his ears cleaned!).
Mater can coexist with other dogs in a home, however Mater can get a bit annoyed when dogs jump on the couch next to him or nip his ankles and neck to antagonize him. When Mater plays with dogs his size, the play is rough and rowdy, but typically quick paced and short and both dogs settle. Mater does not like to share with other dogs. Mater should be always be supervised by his humans when free-roaming the home or fenced yard with other dogs in the home.
Mater will make a great companion to most adopters with dog experience. Mater will need a human that will continue working on Mater's dog reactivity to other dogs while on leash using positive methods. Mater is working on being social with and greeting other dogs while on leash. Mater was never socialized as a younger dog which resulted in Mater being very confused and frustrated when seeing other dogs. Mater may never be a dog park dog, but can definitely make dog friends in the right situations and with human guidance. He is super smart and just needs the proper instruction!
Mater would do best in a home without cats. He is in a foster home in NJ. He’s a really special boy that deserves a special family. He is neutered and up to date on all of his shots. He has the best underbite ever that gives him so much personality!!
