Maxwell was rescued from a rural SC shelter after DDB received an urgent message from one of the staff letting us know his time had run out. Low shed Poodles like Max are very popular family dogs in the DC area, so we knew we could help him, and that he wouldn’t be waiting long to be adopted. We had the perfect foster home ready for him, and planned to bring him to N. VA right away.
When we picked Max up from the shelter it was clear something was off in with his gait. We took him to the vet and discovered he had a dislocated hip and possibly a cracked pelvis, most likely from being kicked or hit, and he’d been living with this pain for a long time. He’s still a young pup for his breed at 4 to 5 years old and only weight 8lbs, so we committed to having hip surgery done to give him a full and healthy life. On the way to surgery, Max began bleeding, and after x-rays were taken we discovered he had a growth blocking his urinary tract that had to be removed. After the relief of finding out it wasn’t cancerous, the surgeon was able to do an all-in-one procedure and even neuter him at the same time, and he’s on his way to a full recovery.
The most incredible thing is that from the start, Max has remained the sweetest little guy, friendly to all, and just happy to be around people who care for him. The hospital staff all adored him and would send constant updates and pics.
Maxwell is now back in his SC foster home recuperating and getting lots of TLC. His foster mom, Denise, happily reports that he’s walking well, peeing normally, and is so very lovable even after all he’s been through. He’s being fostered with another larger dog, and would be great in a calm home with another smaller dog, or do well as an only dog too.
Maxwell will be making the trip to Northern Virginia on 10/15 and is ready to start his new life. If you want to make this sweet little pup a part of your life, apply today.

You can also help save dogs like this one by becoming a foster, providing a rescue dog with a temporary home and giving them the love and care they need until they are permanently adopted. Every person who fosters is directly responsible for saving the life of a dog, because we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. If you think you might be interested in becoming a foster and want to learn more, please go to http://foster.ddbnova.org and fill out an application.
