Nelly is estimated to be a 3 - 4 year old female Pug. She, was transferred to Pug Luv from a shelter after she was picked up as a stray and was not claimed. She has had puppies, and will be placed on a diet to gain several pounds. When she is standing, you can actually see her ribs. She has been, spayed, brought up to date on Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella, heart worm, fecal and blood testing, micro-chipped and have had several teeth extracted. She is potty trained. The shelter stated that she can be food and toy aggressive, although we have not experienced this behavior. She may have some sight issues that are being evaluated and is currently on 2 different eye drops. Should it be necessary she will b seen by the Ophthalmologist. She also has areas of her coat that are thin and this may be a result of an infection and has received a long acting antibiotic injection. She tested heart worm positive and will begin her treatment for this condition on August 8th. The treatment will last for approximately 6 weeks during which time she must be kept calm and not become excited to prevent the heart worms from causing a potential blockage in her arteries that can result in her death. She saw the Ophthalmologist on August 11th for an evaluation.
This little girl has apparently been through far too much in her life. She was picked up in Detroit as a stray. Apparently after her owners were finished using her to produce puppies, they opened their door and sent her on her way. She is so sweet and only wants to please people. She knows to sit on command and go into her crate when asked. At some point in time she must have had a very bad experience with her Veterinary care. It is unbelievable how this sweet and loving little girl switches to aggressive behavior when she is at the Veterinary Office. The Pug Luv vet has determined that Nelly is not 3-4 years old, but 5-7 years old. Another blood test was done, this time by the Pug Luv Veterinarian to ascertain the severity of the heart worm in an attempt to prioritize her treatments. As a result of the test it was decided to proceed with treatment of the heart worm. She will begin her heart worm treatment on August 23rd. At the time she begins her treatment, she will also have the erupted teeth removed that have caused the infection to come through on her face. She has no vision out of one eye and limited vision in the other. There is also concern over her hearing and that will be further evaluated. She saw the Ophthalmologist on August 11th for an evaluation. She has a severe case of pigmentation in her left eye and moderately dense pigmentation in her right eye. As a result, at this time she has no sight in the left eye and little sight in the right eye. She will receive Tacrolimus eye drops in both eyes 3 times a day. Over the next several months this should decrease the pigmentation and her vision in both eyes should dramatically improve.
The 1st heart worm treatment was done and the teeth that needed to be extracted have been done. She does in fact have limited hearing and is on 2 ear medications twice daily. One is 8 drops and the other 6 drops each time.
Nelly had her second heart worm treatment on 9/26. She did well with the treatment and should be came back home on the 28th. She will need to be in a inactive status for one month where she only is out of her crate for potty time and that will be on a leash to keep he activity to a minimum. She will be rechecked in late October to determine the next course of treatment. She has a cyst on the top of her head that must be removed but cannot be done until after the heart worm treatment is completed as to not excite her.

If you cannot adopt her, consider making a donation to help with her Veterinary expenses.
Until all of her medical issues are resolved, she will remain on Medical Hold and will not be at any events until the heart worm treatment is completed.
