What is a Mischievous Mutt???
The Mischievous Mutt program is HSU''s initiative to successfully place dogs with some behavioral challenges. This program allows us to place these dogs for adoption although they may require a little extra training & patience to help them become the best canine companions they can be. They are not bad dogs but need a special type of family to ensure they will thrive in their new home.
What makes this dog a Mischievous Mutt?
Undeniably charming, Oscar is a high flying pup who is full of energy! He is true to his breed type & will need adopters who are not only experienced, but knowledgeable about terriers. Being little trouble makers who tend to think they are larger than life is just the name of their game. They are not the breed for everyone. Oscar has a tough guy attitude with other dogs & may do best as an only pet. He will need an experienced family that can give him a proper outlet for his mounds of energy. It will take patience & dedication to help Oscar learn more proper doggie etiquette, with a healthy dose of impulse control. His typical terrier attitude will likely always shine & care must be used to make sure he doesn''t go overboard with his rough play style. Due to his feisty exuberance, he needs a mature household with sturdy kids at least 10 & up. Oscar''s ideal family will be ready for a rough & tumble dog in a small package, he''ll have you laughing at his high octane antics all day long!
What is recommended to make this adoption successful?
Formal training is strongly recommended. There are many trainers to choose from. We recommend doing your homework to find a trainer who uses science-based positive training methods & has previous experience training dogs with similar behaviors as the dog you''re adopting. We work closely with a certified behavior consultant & highly recommend her services. Any animal adopted from HSU will receive a 25% discount on any services offered. Ample mental stimulation (training) & exercise daily are a must. As Oscar comes out of his shell, you will likely find he will have more energy than you may have expected. Positive training will help to build her overall confidence level & it''s a great way to bond too!
ALL Mischievous Mutt adoptions are finalized by our behavior department. This is done to help you & Oscar succeed.
