Otis is a 6 year old shepherd cross who was surrendered from a local reserve. He is quite fearful of people and will require a very calm and patient owner who will teach him that humans are safe and trustworthy. He is quite anxious and would do best in a home with at least one other dog. Otis does not play, or wag his tail, or illicit attention from humans, as he has never had any reason to do these things. He could be considered semi-feral still, and is not what one would expect in a pet dog; however, with the right owner, Otis will flourish as he has the potential to become a very loving companion. Otis' instinct to flee/escape is still quite high, and he can jump a 6 foot fence, so he must be on leash or tethered when out in the yard. Although Otis is quite timid, he does enjoy ear scratches and will give you his paw to "hold hands" once he gets to know you a little. His favorite treat so far is cheese. Otis enjoys being in his crate, as it is feels like a safe place for him, and he will go in and lay down on his own, most days. He does have to be crated when home alone, or he tends to be destructive due to his anxiety. He is learning to not be afraid of car rides, and has just started to get into the car by himself, with a little coaxing. So far Otis has not shown any aggression toward other dogs or cats, and generally just ignores them. He walks fairly well on a leash, and his housetraining seems to come naturally, having lived previously as an outside dog. Because of Otis' history and fearfulness, he will need an adult only home.
Otis will only be adopted to a home committed to using rewards-based, force-free training: this means no choke chains, pinch collars, shock collars, or dominance-based training methods.
Otis is neutered, vaccinated, flea-treated, dewormed, and microchipped. His adoption fee is $350. If you are interested in adopting Otis, please submit an adoption application at http://animalrescueandoutreach.com/adoption-application.
