Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler

Medium  |  Male

Garden City, NY

QPRT (rhymes with Rupert) is an approximately 1 year old Australian Cattle Dog who was pulled from a shelter in North Carolina, just 30 minutes before he was due to be euthanized.
QPRT has a delightful, comical, spirit. He is truly looking for a connection with people, but right now, he is still learning to be brave in certain situations.
QPRT is gaining courage daily! Oftentimes outdoors he runs right up to foster mom for pets and cuddles. He likes to come in the house and he is great in his crate. He did great at the vet, was very brave and interested in greeting the technicians and other employees.
QPRT has a silly habit of grabbing a toy on his way out the door and playing with it by himself in the yard - absolutely adorable, and we suspect as he gains confidence he may be interested in playing with his people, too!
He absolutely adores playing with other dogs and has a ton of fun racing and wrestling with them!
Sometimes outdoors in the yard he gets spooked at at those times he panics into full blown flight mode. These occurrences are becoming fewer and fewer but due to this risk his adopters must be diligent about keeping him safe and secure. He is absolutely not a candidate for an invisible fence. In a very experienced home, with a dedicated adopter who will never let him off lead until he was confident and solid in his recall (which will require a lot of time, patience, and dedication to be possible), he could be placed into a situation with no fence, but it would need to be a very special fit, and each situation will be considered individually. Essentially - if you have a home with a yard, it needs to be securely fenced to be considered as a home for QPRT. If you have a living situation without a yard, we can discuss options.
He is looking for an adoptive home with people who are patient and loving and who willing to help him continue to gain courage. He needs confident and calm adopters who will allow him to progress at his own pace. He requests that his adoptive family have another playful dog in the home to help him feel brave!
QPRT is cat safe, and he appears to be child safe but he would do best without small children, just because of his spookiness in some situations.
QPRT is up to date on vaccines, neutered, and negative for heartworm and tick borne diseases. He is current on her preventatives and is currently eating a diet grain free kibble.
Interested adopters must be willing to travel to meet QPRT at his foster home, about 30 minutes south of Albany, NY.
