5/25/16: Raleigh and I are celebrating her 1 year anniversary in foster. Sunday made one year since I met her, laying on docs examining table with her leg basically reduced to hamburger meat.
Raleigh survived terrible owners, being hit by cars twice, several surgeries, and months in boarding until she'd healed enough to come home to foster. She deserves the best family ever...are you that family?
On May 22, 2015, a friend contacted me about a dog named Raleigh. She'd been hit by a car in the past and her owners hadn't gotten her any treatment. On this day, she was injured again (same leg) and the owners again declined treatment but this time agreed to surrender her. My vet wasn't sure if he could save her leg, but he wanted to try. After thousands of dollars in donations, multiple surgeries, and 5 months in boarding during her recovery, Raleigh was finally able to come home to foster with me on October 5th. He did manage to save her leg, but she doesn't really use it. Her spine was injured and for those five months in boarding, she was bladder and bowel incontinent. Her tail was cropped during her recovery to make for easier clean up.
When I got her home to foster, I wanted to try to figure out ways to help her improve the incontinence issue. Someone recommended a holistic treatment for the incontinence and it worked great! Raleigh is now fully bladder continent and only occasionally has bowel accidents. She's about 5-6 years old and weighs about 50 lb. Raleigh would do best in a home with someone who's home most of the time to encourage her to go outside to do her business. Right now she'd rather stay indoors where it's warm all the time, but with encouragement she will go outside to potty. You just have to pay attention and keep her on a schedule.
I tested her with a cat outside that wasn't afraid of dogs and she didn't show any interest in the cat. I don't know if she would chase a cat that runs from dogs, but honestly she doesn't move that quickly so I doubt she could catch a cat these days.
As far as other dogs, Raleigh is fine with males but acts dominant/bossy around females.
11/27/15 update: She is good with kids My niece and nephew stayed last night They are 8 and 13 but she did great and so did they. She's a sweet dog who deserves so much more than life has thrown at her so far. We're hoping someone can find it in their heart to give her a forever home.
