From the Foster:
Ranger was a good dog, with a best doggy friend, and a great owner. He lived a happy life, and it should have carried on that way until the end, but it didn’t. Tragically, Ranger’s owner passed away, and he and his best doggy friend were shuffled along to an animal shelter in Kentucky where his best doggy friend would soon die of a broken heart.

Blind, alone, and in a strange place, Ranger gave up. One thing I REALLY love about Secondhand Hounds, is the fact that they go out of their way to help dogs like Ranger when they feel like they can’t go on anymore, and nobody cares about them.

Ranger rebounded after he made his trip to Minnesota. Once he got familiar with his foster home, you would never guess he was blind. He knows exactly where every step, every piece of furniture, and every dog bed is. He is a bit of what they call a ‘velcro dog’ and he wants to be right by you helping you with whatever you’re doing.
Ranger is 100% house trained with no accidents, and does well left loose in the house, even if you’re gone during the day. He is currently not allowed on furniture, and sleeps in a dog bed or on the floor. He would do best with a fenced yard not because he is a runner, but because he needs to be able to learn his territory safely.

Because he is vision impaired, he gets overwhelmed in new situations and with new people, and can nip when he is nervous. Like most dogs, he needs proper introductions to new people and animals, but once that is done, he does well with other mild dogs and people. He is too interested in cats and birds to live in a home with them. He isn't a giant fan of going on long walks or going in cars - again, he gets nervous when he doesn't know where he is going or what he is doing.

What he needs the most is a forever home to live out his golden years. One that understands that he needs to familiarize himself with new things, and that understands that while he is a very smart, loving dog, his days of going for long walks and going new places are behind him. He is, however, ready to welcome you home every evening, and help you watch movies, and relax in the backyard, and cook, and anything else you love to do at home if you are ready to give him the chance.
All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.
If you would like to meet/adopt this animal or anyone else, then please fill out an adoption application at and the foster(s) will be in touch! Keep in mind that there may be multiple applicants applying for the same animal(s). You only need to complete 1 application for multiple animals that you're interested in.
Note - We change an animal's listing to say "PENDING ADOPTION" when they already had a meet and greet with a family who plans to adopt that animal. We put "NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS" on a listing when an animal has multiple applications in and the foster has asked to stop accepting any more while they review the applications they've already received.

If you would like to be a foster for Secondhand Hounds, then please fill out a foster application, You can choose the type of animal you'd like to foster and we will supply everything you need (food, collar, bowls, crate, etc.) while the animal is in your care.
