Beautiful Rigby is a 1-year old Shepherd/Whippet mix that has had a luckless start to life. During Christmastime 2014, at the tender age of 3 months, Rigby was brought into a local vet, seriously ill with intestinal worms as a result of not receiving appropriate care. He required overnight hospitalization, to which his owners initially agreed. A small down payment was made with a promise to return with the remainder of the money and to collect the sweet puppy left in the vet's care. Sadly, that was the last time that Rigby ever saw the only family he ever knew. Even after repeated calls and certified letters, no one came to claim Rigby. Hope quickly faded that another home would step forward and weeks turned into months. Rigby spent the next 5 months of his puppyhood growing up without a family in the boarding area of the veterinary office. Having spent formative months outside of a home environment has resulted in Rigby lacking confidence with new people and environments. One of the technicians took Rigby into foster to try and work on getting him used to what it means to be a dog. Rigby has been in her home for the past 4 four months and loves other animals and enjoys nothing more than to run around and play with his foster siblings. However, due to his lack of exposure to areas outside of the veterinary clinic and his foster home, he is very timid in new situations. This has limited his options for being adopted and we are seeking a foster home that is better suited to meeting Rigby's needs. His current foster home was only supposed to be temporary and Rigby has been there longer than expected. Due to unusually long work hours, the current arrangement is no longer in Rigby's best interest, so he must find a new foster home or adoptive home asap. Rigby would do best in a home with 1-2 other dog-friendly dogs. Ideally, his foster home should be willing to expose him to new situations and basic training to help him become used to new situations, resulting in him feeling less stressed with changes. Rigby is highly food motivated and very much still puppy-like in his behavior as he bonds with his humans. All Rigby wants is to be a dog and to enjoy life. He just wants to be everything to someone, just as he should have been from the beginning. He just needs some help realizing that the world isn't a scary place. Once he comes into himself he will be a great dog for an active home. We are seeking a foster or adoptive home that is willing to provide love and patience, an investment with a lifetime return of loyalty and companionship. Rigby has a gentle, yet captivating spirit, with all the promise of blossoming into the canine companion that he has truly always possessed and desires to express. PAS will pay for training classes as soon as Rigby is in a foster home or an adoptive home within the Greater New Orleans area. Our adoptions include a foster period of 4-6 weeks so that you can be sure that this pet is a good fit without any pressure, and we are available to answer any behavior or training questions during that time (and beyond, if you wish).
**Local adoptions preferred (within 1-2 hrs of the Greater New Orleans area), but please contact us if you live outside of this area, as exceptions are sometimes made on an individual basis depending on the dog or circumstances. We do not ship animals, as a part of our adoption process is for the potential adopter(s) to meet the dog to assess if he/she is a match for the family.
