Miss Sarah came to us from Georgia, and she is a real southern belle. She is about six years old, a beautiful sable color and very sweet. She came to us just before Christmas with a broken femur. Someone had shot this sweet girl and left her for dead. Some time had passed between being shot and her arrival at her SGSR foster home, and after consults with her vet and surgeon, it was determined that amputation would be in her best interest. However, on her surgery day, her vet took an X-ray and determined that the bones in her leg were healing in such a way that saving her leg was a real possibility. We decided that, since she wasn't in any pain, that we would adopt a "wait and see" approach. With each subsequent X-ray, it was apparent that she wouldn't need an amputation after all! Sarah will probably always have a slight limp, but at her age, we don't expect that she's going to be running any marathons (although she does like nice, long walks)!
Thunder storms and very loud noises make Sarah a bit nervous, but for the most part, she is very laid back and well behaved. She is a little bossy with her furry foster brother, also a GSD, and she loves to tease and chase the cats. Sarah corrects very easily and especially loves going for car rides. Her favorite toy is her metal food dish, which is probably due to being an outdoor dog in the past and not having dog toys. She does enjoy balls but will destroy them rather quickly. She did once eat a small section of a plushy toy, so these type of toys are not a safe choice for her. She knows "down", "sit", "lay" and "shake". And Sarah walks fairly well on a leash but will still pull.
She enjoys camping and does very well off-leash, and she likes the beach as well. She is not overly affectionate, but will come to you when she wants attention. Sarah is a great companion dog.
