Age: 8 months...Meet Serge. Serge came in from Korea mid-June with his sister Sia, when they were 4 months old, after being saved from the Korean dog meat market by a rescuer there. Both cute as buttons, Sia was put up on the site after a couple of weeks, and was adopted shortly afterwards. Serge, on the other hand, starting exhibiting signs of illness, what we originally thought was kennel cough. It worsened quickly, and his foster dad rushed him to the vet, who sent him packing off to the specialty veterinary hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Being so young, he got very ill very quickly, and spent 5 days in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, where, for a couple of days, we thought we might lose him. Discouraging as things were, we were determined not to give up on him, despite the enormous costs involved-he was a fighter, and we could not imagine him coming all the way from Korea to a new chance at a good life here, only to succumb to illness once arrived. Thankfully, he began to pull through, and he was finally well enough to exit the hospital and return to his foster home. Now, three months later, he has been cleared by his veterinarian for adoption, the only residual from his bout with pneumonia being a partially collapsed portion of one lung, which, other than getting winded after fierce sessions of wrestling, running, and playing, should not cause him any other issue going forward. Serge is a great pup, who hasn’t let his precarious start in life, nor his subsequent bout with pneumonia, slow him down one bit. He is completely house trained, and, although his house manners are pretty good, the temptation to get into something he shouldn’t does occasionally occur-not excessively though, considering he is still a pup. He does not counter surf, and though he likes to pick things up that might be lying around, he generally does not chew them. Generally…see above re still being a puppy. He doesn’t dig, nor is he much of a barker. Hs leash manners are pretty decent, and he displays no shyness of any kind, meeting people and their dogs well. He has a great temperament, and although he can be high energy, he can settle very nicely on down times-he is not all crazy puppy energy 24/7. He LOVES playing with his foster fur brothers, and can be very feisty, holding his own, and then some, with his bigger golden brothers, wresting and tug of war being his favorites. He has not met any cats, but does show pretty good interest in bunnies, birds, and lizards- being so young, a dog savvy cat could probably educate him in short order as to what cats are all about. His foster family is working on training him, and he is learning to sit, stay, and will usually come when called. Unless, of course there is a serious game of something going on.. then he might need a little more prompting. He is still pretty much a work in progress, and continued focus on his training would be of great benefit, both for him and for his new family. Serge will fit easily into most homes, but the one thing that is a definite for him in his new home is a playmate who will wrestle, play tug of war, and just generally hang with him, as he loves to be with his fur brothers at all times. He would enjoy being in an active, busy household, and kids would be a bonus. He is still quite young, and therefore, would also need a human who would be around much, if not all of the time-he would not do well left alone for 8+ hours.
