What is a Mischievous Mutt???
The Mischievous Mutt program is HSU''s initiative to successfully place dogs with some behavioral challenges. This program allows us to place these dogs for adoption although they may require a little extra training & patience to help them become the best canine companions they can be. They are not bad dogs but need a special type of family to ensure they will thrive in their new home.
What makes this dog a Mischievous Mutt?
Sky is a one-of-a-kind Pitbull blend that''s sure to catch your attention, not only is she beautiful but she is also deaf. Because of their spectacular sense of smell & ability to adjust quickly to new circumstances, dogs with this condition can live relatively normal lives. However, Sky is going to need a very special family who understands that she will need special training. Adding a special needs pup to your family is a bit more of a commitment than taking home a dog who is not considered to have special needs. When on a leash she gets so excited to see other dogs that sometimes she can get carried away & has a hard time calming down. Since she''s deaf, getting her attention will take adopters that are willing & ready to get her the training she needs, including a healthy dose of impulse control! Due to her leash reactivity & history, she''ll require a home with canine pals who are similar in size & energy level. She will be most likely to succeed in a home with experienced large dog owners!
What is recommended to make this adoption successful?
Formal training is strongly recommended. There are many trainers to choose from. We recommend doing your homework to find a trainer who uses science-based positive training methods & has previous experience training dogs with similar behaviors as the dog you''re adopting. We work closely with a certified behavior consultant & highly recommend her services. Any animal adopted from HSU will receive a 25% discount on any services offered. ALL Mischievous Mutt adoptions are finalized by our behavior department. This is done to help you & Sky succeed. If a behavior staff member is not available, the adoptions staff can assist you in making an appointment. (This is typically the case on weekends & between 4-7 pm during the week.) If you have another dog at home, you will need to bring them in for an introduction. We will assist you in introducing them & provide feedback based on their interactions.
