Announcing... Swagger - Swag for short 'cause that tail is ALWAYS wagging! He is a handsome 1-1.5 year old Redbone Coonhound. He's so gorgeous that when we're walking down the street people stop to ask about him!
He weighs about 84 lbs currently, but could stand to gain another 5-10 lbs. Swagger was found as a stray in Georgia being held around the neck by a six-year-old girl. This little girl coincidentally lives just down the street from Swag's foster home and she runs out to pet him every time he's walked by. He LOVES to be petted and ADORES children. He will even bow his head in appreciation, he's definitely a gentle giant! True to his breed, Swagger is a dog looking for a job! He has a great nose and would love to do scent work or agility or specialty training. He is a counter-surfer and because of his size this doesn't take much effort - he just has to lift his head. He does understand "NO!" He doesn't seem to get that he's too big to be a lap dog and when he's told "Off" he looks at you like you don't love him anymore. As with all dogs, Swagger needs daily exercise...he loves to go for walks and pick up scents and does well on the leash. His current foster uses a "choke" chain collar to walk him and gives one quick "jerk and release" to remind him not to pull. He currently barks while riding in the car, but is working good car manners and house training. This gentle pup is intelligent, eager to please, very affectionate, and obedient. Swagger was bred to be a "coon dog," and his prey drive is very strong. While out walking in the woods, if he gets the scent of something he points and then throws back his head to howl. While at the vet's office he was a bit afraid and wanted cuddling, but then he saw a deer head on the wall and tried to jump the 8 feet into the air to get it. When his fosters told him "NO!" he looked at them as though they were crazy, "Don't you know there's a deer right there???" He is good with cats - they could care less about each other. Sometimes, being his playful, curious self, he sticks his nose in their face and gets a "left hook" which makes him back off real quick! He has never charged a cat. His foster has a kitten who tries to play with Swag by smacking him, running a little ways away and waits for Swag to come to him. There's not a mean bone in Swag's body, so it's all fun and games. Because of the size difference however, a watchful eye is in order. He enjoys the company of other dogs and is very calm around them, but he's not the kind of dog who'll lay down and let another dog try to control him - he's an alpha, but with a kind heart. As with all new family members, Swagger could benefit from obedience training to teach him good house manners. Obedience classes are a great way to bond with your new family member.
Swagger is a fun, joyful dog! What do you say...couldn't everyone use a little country Swagger in their life??
