From the Foster:
Thumper is the ultimate lap dog. She has a wonderful personality - sweet, curious, playful, cuddly, and don’t forget sassy and spunky. She is a typical puppy who likes to chew on things, and she is working on potty training and crate training. She has had a few accidents of both varieties in the couple days she’s been with me, but also knows what to do when she’s outside. At 4 months and 2#, her bladder is tiny and she needs to go out frequently - every couple hours if she’s not sleeping. Her only tell right now when she needs to go outside is she starts acting really antsy and tries to squiggle out of your arms if you’re holding her. She gets up about one time during the night to go potty. I let her sleep in my bed. It’s the ultimate dog bed for a peanut like herself.
She is quite social and likes to be where all the people are/action is. She is a bit needy that way as she often follows me around unless she’s knocked out cold. She is currently not a huge fan of being left alone. She has at least gotten better with being ok being in a different room than me, or if I have to run upstairs for a bit. She will need someone who can be patient and gradually work with her on being more comfortable with being alone. She may be small but she has a voice and will yip and cry when alone. As she’s learning, it may be best to not go to a home with shared walls. Alternatively, I’m sure she would love a home where someone is home most of the time. She is also great at accompanying me to many public places whilst riding in my sweatshirt. ;-) Other than that she has been fairly quiet and only barks when she hears my dog barking at things outside.
Because Thumper is so tiny, she needs to eat frequent meals each day until she grows bigger (possibly up to 10# according to the vet). The vet said she should eat 4 small meals a day for now, so she will need a home with people who are around to do this. She was released from her breeder in OK because she would crash if not fed regularly enough. We want to prevent this from happening! As a side note, she is also going to have some kidney values rechecked in a couple weeks as a precaution, but the vet did rule out diabetes at her last visit!
Thumper lives with a lazy, old man 90# dog and a squirrelly cat. They all do great together. She loves to meet other dogs at the pet store, and she LOVES to play with my cat even though he is still 5x her size. She does bouncy laps around him, wrestles a bit, paws him in the most adorable way, and scampers around the house with him. She would probably love a small, gentle playmate in her new home - canine or feline, who can also help her learn things like stairs and automatic sliding doors. I would be worried that a large, playful dog would accidentally hurt her because she is so small. Likewise, I think she would do best and be safest in a home with older kids who can interact with her gently and respectfully, or a home with just adults since she is so fragile. Even still, because she likes to be near you, you’ll learn to step lightly as she’s often on your heels or prancing around your feet.
She walks pretty well on a leash though sometimes decides she doesn’t want to go forward anymore. I had much difficulty finding a harness in stores small enough to fit her, but a secure collar and lightweight leash should do the trick. She doesn’t pull at all. If anything, she’s a few steps behind you hustling to keep up.
Thumper is like an infant - it’s so entertaining to watch her play, sleep, and explore this weird, giant world. Sometimes she tries to sleep standing up with her back legs on your lap, and her front paws and chin resting on the table. You can imagine how this ends. Prepare for errands to the pet store to take 3x as long because everyone will want to stop you and ask if she’s real and then meet her. I am enamored with Thumper, and I am sure you will be too!
All dogs are in individual foster homes throughout the Twin Cities.
