An 11-year-old girl who has been forgoing birthday presents for years and instead asks her friends and family to donate money to the charity of her choice, has saved a puppy from Korea who would have probably been killed for food.

Izabella Cantu of Ashland, Oregon, chose Guardians International, a nonprofit that works to protect animals from the dog meat trade, as her charity this year, according to Kobi5.com.

She raised $500 for the charity from her birthday donations and with that money, she was able to save and adopt Leliu, a six-month-old Jindo mix puppy from South Korea’s dog meat trade.

“It makes me feels very upset that happens. I don’t understand why people do it,” Cantu told Kobi5.com. “I don’t want other animals to suffer so then my mom let me pick one of them to keep so one less animal didn’t have to suffer,” she said.

Cantu’s stepdad, Brent Hirunpugdi, not knowing what condition Leliu would be in upon arrival from Korea, made the trip from Oregon to San Francisco to pick Leliu up from the airport.

“We were pretty concerned of how she would be on arrival but once I was able to pick her up it was pretty exciting she was in good health and good spirit,” Hirunpugdi told Kobi5.com.

Leliu is doing fine since she was saved five months ago, and Izabella couldn’t be happier.

“She’s basically my soul mate, we’ve had a lot of time to bond and stuff and without her I don’t know what I’d do,” she said.

This girl set a pretty noble priority in lieu of birthday presents. Now she has given a rescued dog the birthday gift of life.
