When you were 6 years old what did you want for your birthday? A stuffed toy? A shiny new bike? Or how about a new doll?

For Jasper Rose of Watertown, Massachusetts, he wasn’t interested in material things that often end up unused. Instead, Jasper wanted to help some animals to live a better life.

Specifically, the thoughtful kindergartner wanted to help the sea turtle rescue program at the New England Aquarium, so that is what he did, the aquarium wrote on its website. Forgoing gifts, Jasper raised $550 for the program that works to rescue stranded sea turtles, rehabilitate them and release them back into the wild. He presented a check on Earth Day last week to the Aquarium’s president and CEO, Nigelia Hillgarth.

Jasper, who has been going to the aquarium since he was 3 years old, is a turtle lover. A tour of the sea turtle hospital in Quincy, Massachusetts, last winter furthered his affinity for the reptiles. He knows all of the names of the turtles at the aquarium as well as their individual stories, and has even written and illustrated a 10-page book about a sea turtle’s adventures, according to the aquarium. Congratulations to Jasper for working so hard to raise money for the sea turtle rescue and for raising the awareness of these endangered animals.
