A boy in Alberta, Canada, earlier this month found a small bull snake curled up in his shoe, and did what any 11-year-old would do.

After Blake Dahl and his father captured the snake, he asked his parents if he could keep it, but his mother said no, according to CTV News.

That’s when local junior high school teacher Laura Anderson volunteered to take in the snake and picked up the reptile from the Dahl family.

“It has been a few years since I had a snake,” Anderson told CTV News. “We just love having it around.”

Dan, as Anderson’s son named the snake, is apparently very popular with her students and has helped to pique their interest in snakes.

“It’s gotten them to do a little bit of research too, which of course, as a teacher, is wonderful,” Anderson said to the news outlet.

A permit is required to keep a bull snake in Alberta and, according to wildlife officials, permits are usually granted to zoos and other educational institutions.

Anderson, who is currently fostering the snake, plans to get a proper species identification of the snake. If the wildlife officers tell her she can’t keep the reptile as a pet, she will turn it over to wildlife officials.

“If it’s a wild animal then it would be better suited in the wild,” she told CTV News.
