Ben Is — No — Was The Saddest Cat In The World

Ginger tabby Ben was spared from euthanasia and turned his life around in a loving home.

Ben didn’t have many prospects in life. He looked down, and not simply because excess skin on his face gave him sad cat eyes. The ginger tabby had a crushed spine, cauliflower ear and cuts on his body, and a label: unadoptable.

But the love of a happy home turned Ben’s life around, as the Instagram account benbencatcat shows. Ben was recently adopted from the British Columbia Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where staff said he likely suffered a large animal attack and would never walk again.

“We adopted Ben because we instantly fell in love with his face,” Sandra, who preferred to use only her first name, told Petcha.com. “Even though he was broken and had a poor prognosis we knew he deserved a second chance!”

With Sandra’s kindness, his outlook has changed. Not only can Ben purr and play, but he rabbit kicks and goes on walks as well.

“Ben started to turn corners once he had a forever home,” Sandra told us. “It’s hard to get lots of one-on-one time when cats are in shelters and they are confined to kennels that can barely fit litter boxes let alone toys and room to move around.”

“Once he got to our place and had a whole apartment to stretch and toys to play with, we think that was a turning point for him,” Sandra said. “We never pushed him, we just continued his medication and let him decide when enough physical activity was enough.”

The final achievement came when Ben began to not walk, but run and even jump small distances. Photos of Ben walking outside on a leash or strolling the aisles of a pet store show that he’s become a very confident, capable cat.

His progress speaks to all the amazing potential that shelter cats have, and Sandra wants people to see that.

“We truly hope Ben’s story inspires others to adopt!” Sandra said.

It’s far cry from his unadoptable days. Things are really looking up for Ben the cat.

  • I am so happy to see Ben become who he was meant to be. I treat my pets like little people. We don’t communicate the same, but I think we understand each other. I know the feelings are the same. This has made my day. People who torture animals need to pay severely for their crime. Thank you.

  • So happy for you and Ben. Adoption is the only ethical way to go.
Every pet I’ve had in my adult life has been adopted from shelters, and I wouldn’t have it any other way

  • I think BenBen looked so sad because he just gave up. You can see the difference in the pictures where “mo one wanted him” to the next one where he was “caught” with the shoes ツ Same injuries, but totally different expression. This shows what love and kindness, and a bit of time, can accomplish ♥♥♥ Sandra and her family are just as beautiful as BenBen.
    And I wuv BenBen’s teefies.
Onion thing going here – gotta go.

  • GOD BLESS YOU FOR SAVING THIS CAT!

I would of done the same thing. My heart went out to this cat and what he has been through. I also have an orange and white tabby. He is my best friend who gives a lot of unconditional love. People could learn from cats.
