The most beautiful things in this world do not blend in — they demand your attention with their bold individuality. Rowdy is one of these beautifully unique things.

The black Labrador Retriever from Canby, Oregon, has a skin condition called vitiligo, Fox 12 Oregon reports. This condition causes loss of color in patches of the skin, and it can be found in humans — most notably, the late Michael Jackson — and animals.

Luckily, veterinarians say the condition is not threatening and they do not expect the condition to have an affect on Rowdy aside from the loss of pigmentation, according to Fox 12.

Rowdy’s signature look is so memorable, though, because his vitiligo left him with matching white patches around his eyes. The patches resemble a superhero’s mask, making the already cool Rowdy about a billion times cooler.

Because not only has this eye mask made him a local celebrity, he has also overcome some seriously crazy scenarios in his 13 years. His owners, Niki and Tim Umbenhower, told Fox 12 Oregon that Rowdy not only survived being poisoned by river water, but also being accidentally shot by police during a mistaken burglary.

So… is Rowdy ACTUALLY a superhero? Hmm…

  • Awww so sweety, and cute at the same time 🙂 pleased that this condition is not a life threat. And the police should be more careful not to just shoot out 🙁
    Go Rowdy !!!!

  • rowdy is most definitely a hero and he most certainly has earned his name. the officer who shot rowdy should have known better- I most certainly believe – but it only brings rowdy from heroism to SUPER heroism.

we too, have a thirteen-year-old black-lab and are so grateful for all of the joy she has brought to us and continues to bring us. this senior-years are very special times to be cherished.

much love to rowdy and gratitude to those who have loved him his whole life.

for rowdy and for our “sweet shayna” ……… I PRAY that they will continue to bless us with their love for as long as they are able before going home to the “rainbow bridge.”

  • Vitiligo can – in humans – be a marker of cancer. So keep in mind if this is also the case for dogs.

  • @Susanne J, I never knew that vitilgo could be a precursor to cancer. I know 2 people who have it and will tell them just a FYI. As far as Rowdy, he’s so adorable and apparently part cat as he has already used some of his 9 lives. Live long and healthy Rowdy.

  • Actually, the few studies that have been done say that people with vitiligo have a reduced incidence of all types of skin cancer, and there are no other risk factors associated with the disease.

  • Wow! Beautiful, unique dog and I agree, definitely a superhero! I’d never heard of vitiligo before, although now that I think about it, I’m sure I have probably seen some people who have it and just didn’t realize the cause! So Rowdy is also a teacher who can make people aware of this condition!

  • I hope his guardians use skin protectant around his eyes. Due to the lack of fur, he needs protection against the sun.

    Guest100 December 30, 2015 8:42 pm Reply
  • Did the fur turn white or did it fall out & leave bare skin? I don’t think I’ve ever seen an animal with this. He looks like a very happy dog. Go Rowdy!!
