Dusky Lory

Traits

Dusky lories can make a very high-pitched screeching sound. They are very intelligent and entertaining, and make excellent, interactive pets. Dusky lories can learn to speak very well and their intelligence, as well as stunning beauty, make them popular among pet bird enthusiasts.

Behavior / Health Concerns

Dusky lories are extremely active and playful. Everything is a toy to them, so they should have a lot of safe pet bird toys and materials to chew on and play with. In the wild, dusky lories feed on nectar, flowers, fruits, pollen and seeds. In our homes, nectar is a critical part of their diet, so speak with your avian veterinarian for the best diet for them. Dusky lories have a tendency to squirt waste matter and because their diets contain nectar, the fairly liquid-like waste can make the surrounding area near the cage dirty. Easy-to-cleans surfaces around the pet bird cage or aviary, or an area where waste can be easily hosed off, are good pet bird housing options.
