Ibizan Hound

This tall, slender sporting hound has erect ears and bears a close resemblance to depictions of Anubis, the dog god of ancient Egypt. It’s likely that the Ibizan shares ancestry with another Mediterranean hunting hound, the Pharaoh. The Ibizan is highly prized as a hunter of small game, chiefly hare, rabbit and birds. Unlike most coursing hounds that hunt only by sight, the Ibizan uses scent and sound as well in pursuit of its quarry. Males measure from 25 to 29 inches at the shoulder and ideally weigh from 45 to 50 pounds; females are proportionately smaller. They fit well in any size home. Coat color must be white and red, white and lion, or solid white, red or lion, harmonized by pigmentation of eyes, lips and nose. The coat is either smooth or rough, which is one to three inches long, needing only weekly brushing. Texture of both types is coarse. This is a unique breed with lots of energy, so be sure to provide an outlet for its exercise needs. Ibizans are skilled high jumpers, so a good fence is a must. Like most sighthounds, the Ibizan Hound is an indifferent watchdog, but on the plus side, it’s an even-tempered, affectionate, loyal family pet that’s not difficult to train. Give your Ibizan a good daily walk and some playtime, and you will become fast friends.
