A growling cat had a message for her family: someone was breaking in the house!

Gosport’s Victoria Rumsey was sleeping soundly when she was awoken by the sound of her cat, Abbi, racing up and down the hallway and growling. As the mother of a young daughter, Emily, whom Abbi is highly protective of; Rumsey’s thoughts instantly flew to Emily’s safety.

“[Abbi] would follow me around when I was pregnant and would stay close, Rumsey told The Portsmouth News about her burglar-alarm cat. “When Emily was born, she became even more protective and is always close to Emily. If Emily wakes up crying in the middle of the night, Abbi will let us know. I heard her growling in the hallway so got up to check on Emily. She was fast asleep but Abbi was still growling and hissing.”

Attempts to calm Abbi, who was adopted from Gosport Cats Protection three-years-ago, were unsuccessful, so Rumsey began searching for the cause of her kitty’s unusual behavior. Peeking out the window, she saw that her back gate was open, and, upon further investigation involving a tiptoed trip downstairs, discovered that the key to her back door was missing.

Police were immediately called, arriving on the scene with a police dog in tow, who quickly recovered 35-year-old Nicky Russell. Russell was apprehended quickly, pleading guilty to one count of burglary – his sentencing will be served this month.

“Nothing like this has ever happened to us before and it was a little scary,” says Rumsey. “If it wasn’t for Abbi, we wouldn’t have known until the morning when we realized the key was missing. If that had happened, I would have been so worried that he might come back because he had the back door key. So it is a relief to know that the police found him so quickly.”

How’s that for a supurrhero?
