$600,000 up for grabs in the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge, where dog and cat shelters challenge themselves to adopt out more pets than they did last year.

$600,000 up for grabs in the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray Challenge, where dog and cat shelters challenge themselves to adopt out more pets than they did last year.

Forty-nine dog and cat shelters are competing for a $100,000 grand prize and $500,000 in grants as part of the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge.

The contest encourages pet shelters to save more cats and dogs in June, July and August than they did over the same three months last year. Competing shelters last year saved more than 56,000 cats and dogs, an increase of 14,376 over the same period in 2011.

The top $100,000 prize will go to the dog and cat shelter that achieves the greatest increase in animals saved. The shelter that engages community members the best will win $25,000. Prizes of $10,000 to $25,000 will be awarded for other achievements.

The contest is named after celebrity cook, author and animal advocate Rachael Ray, who also produces a line of food and treats for dogs called Rachael Ray Nutrish. The New York-based American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is a contest co-sponsor.
