A Syracuse, N.Y., postal worker and his family have won $100,000 from “America’s Funniest Home Videos.” Joe Cassidy, from Baldwinsville, N.Y., filmed himself in the midst of an aggressive tug-of-war with a cat last October between the cat and the mail.
Titled “Mail Slot Menace,” the video went up against nine others to pull the $100,000 grand prize. Together at Pizza Man Pub, Cassidy’s family and friends joined him to watch the show. The pub was closed that night for the occasion. And yes, Cassidy covered the pizza and chicken wings. As soon as the clip was shown, the entire restaurant cheered and clapped. Because Cassidy wasn’t allowed to tell anyone about the win, it was a complete surprise. “Everyone kept asking me, but I didn’t tell anyone,” Cassidy says.
Although Cassidy loves cats, the one shown in the video is not his, but the man who owns the house. After three separate “attacks” while delivering the mail, Cassidy finally decided it was worth filming. About that day he says, “It was October so I was wearing gloves for the first time, and the cat grabbed my glove. That made the video. That glove won me $100,000.”
Unfortunately, the cat’s owner does not want his name released, and the cat has not been back on the porch since the filming. “I love that cat,” Cassidy says. “Now I just see him in the window.”
When the host of the show, Tom Bergeron, asked what they’ll be doing with the money, Cassidy replied, “College is coming like a freight train for [Cassidy’s daughter], so we know that some of it’s gonna have to go to that.”
The final step in winning the ultimate grand prize – a vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The show airs May 18 on ABC.
