Taiwan’s next president could be its first female leader, in a position that some say is the most powerful Chinese-speaking leader in the world. She has a law degree from Cornell and a PhD from the London School of Economics, supports gay rights, would usher in executive power with a progressive political party, and loves cats.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Tsai Ing-Wen currently has 56% of more than 8 million votes cast, according to domestic media outlet UDN. Her pro-Beijing Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party opponent Eric Chu has just conceded defeat.

The current ruling party KMT is conservative and pro-Bejing. Tsai’s DPP supports independence and leans progressively. KMT has ruled the island almost consistently since seceding, except for a brief period, and Tsai is widely credited furthering the party’s reputation.

She’s also plainly stated her support of gay rights saying in a video: “In the face of love, everyone is equal. Let everyone have the freedom to love and to pursue their happiness. I am Tsai Ing-wen, and I support marriage equality.”

And, according to an article on Quartz, “Her love of her two cats “Xiang xiang,” or “Think think,” and “Ah Tsai,” is well-known. One of them starred in her Chinese New Year’s message last year.”

That’s all we really needed to hear.
