Walter is a 7-month-old Terrier/Chihuahua puppy who spent much of his life in a shelter because he was deaf, as those who saw him didn’t want to adopt a puppy who couldn’t hear or was “different” from other puppies. His life changed when 10-year-old Julia and her mother, Chrissy, walked into the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA in Pasadena, California.

Julia, like Walter, is also deaf, and when Chrissy learned Walter was deaf, she became excited to adopt a dog that is just like her daughter.

“When I first held Julia, since she couldn’t really hear, she would smell my neck,” her mom said in a video posted on the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA Facebook page. “And when I first held Walter he did almost the same exact thing. I remember just looking at him, and I knew that he was meant to be ours.”

Despite being born deaf, Walter is like any other happy-go-lucky puppy. He loves to play ball. He loves to be held. And now, Julia is teaching him sign language. So far, she has taught him to sit, drink water and eat, all without him hearing a word.

“They’re the same,” Chrissy, whose last name was not made public, said in the video. “He waits for her to finish her homework, and then they’re off to go play in the yard. She has learned a whole other kind of love.”

“I love Walter,” Julia said. “Walter is my best friend.
