The dog, now called Athena, is recovering well and — even better — might already have a new home.

The French Mastiff who was discovered buried up to her neck in a mound of dirt in France is expected to make a full recovery from her terrifying ordeal.

The dog, who has been named Athena, has been in the care of the V24 veterinary clinic in the Parisian suburb Levallois-Perret since she was freed from her would-be grave by a passerby.

“She’s doing very well,” clinic staffer Barthélémy Balli told The Dodo.

Balli said the 10-year-old dog was apprehensive at first, but has since warmed up to the staff, revealing that she’s still capable of loving and trusting humans, despite the cruelty she was forced to endure.

“She’s very friendly, not aggressive at all,” he said. “She’s a good, good dog. Really very nice.”

Athena reportedly has been placed in the care of the Société Protectrice des Animaux and, as soon as she’s able, she might be heading to a new home.

“I think they already found a family for her,” Balli told The Dodo. “There is a police investigation ongoing, so we don’t have a lot of information about that.”

Athena’s former owner has been charged with animal cruelty and is facing up to two years in prison and fines of up to $32,600.
