Nature’s Variety has voluntarily recalled their Instinct Raw Chicken Formula due to possible salmonella risk.

Nature’s Variety, based in St. Louis, MO, has issued a voluntary recall of their Instinct Raw Chicken Formula for dogs due to the possibility of salmonella contamination. The recall is limited to products with a “Best By” date of 04/27/06, located below the seal on the back of the package. The recall was issued after Nature’s Variety was made aware of the possible risk by the FDA; a routine sampling of the 7-pound package of Instinct Raw Chicken Bites had positive results for salmonella.

“At Nature’s Variety we take quality and safety very seriously. We believe that under all circumstances, health and safety comes first, and we are committed to providing the best possible nutrition for pets,” Nature’s Variety Chief Executive Officer Reed Howlett said.

Salmonella Symptoms in Humans

Consumers who have been exposed to salmonella may experience abdominal cramping, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, nausea or vomiting. Although rare, more serious ailments – such as arterial infections, arthritis, endocarditis, eye irritation, muscle pain and urinary tract symptoms – may occur. Individuals who have had contact with the recalled product and are experiencing any of these symptoms should consult their physician.

Salmonella Symptoms in Dogs

Dogs may become infected without showing signs of symptoms; these pets can be carriers and may infect other pets or individuals. Dogs with symptoms could exhibit vomiting, lethargy, fever or diarrhea or bloody diarrhea. Consumers whose pets have eaten the recalled product and have any of those symptoms should consult their veterinarian.
